The AS78L12RTR-G1 from Diodes Incorporated is a fixed 12V positive voltage regulator capable of delivering up to 100mA output current in a SOT-89 package. The device requires only external input and output capacitors for stable operation. It features internal thermal shutdown and short-circuit current limiting for reliable operation. Typical dropout voltage is 1.7V, requiring a minimum input voltage of 14.8V. The low quiescent current of 4mA typical minimizes power dissipation. The device is pin-compatible with industry-standard 78L12 regulators in SOT-89 package.

The AS78L12RTR-G1 uses a series-pass regulator topology. (1) Reference: An internal bandgap voltage reference provides a stable 1.25V reference. (2) Error Amplifier: The error amplifier compares a divided-down version of the output voltage to the reference and drives the series-pass transistor to maintain 12V at the output. (3) Pass Transistor: A Darlington NPN series-pass transistor regulates output voltage by dropping excess voltage between input and output. (4) Protection: Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 150C junction temperature, disabling the pass transistor. Short-circuit current limiting restricts output current to approximately 200mA under fault conditions. (5) Bypass Capacitors: A 0.33uF input capacitor prevents oscillation with high source impedance. A 0.1uF output capacitor improves transient response.
