The B540C-13-F from Diodes Incorporated is a 5A, 40V Schottky barrier rectifier in a SMC (DO-214AB) surface-mount package. The Schottky barrier construction provides a low 0.55V maximum forward voltage drop at 5A, significantly reducing conduction losses compared to silicon PN junction rectifiers. The 40V reverse voltage rating is suitable for 12V and 24V power systems. The guard ring structure provides ruggedness against voltage transients and ESD events. The low reverse recovery charge of the Schottky construction (near-zero recovery time) makes the device ideal for high-frequency switching applications where PN junction diode recovery losses would be prohibitive. The SMC package provides a compact footprint with adequate thermal performance for the 5A current rating. The 150C maximum junction temperature and 150A surge current rating ensure robustness in demanding power applications. The device is optimized for switch-mode power supply output rectification, DC-DC converter free-wheeling, and reverse polarity protection.

The B540C-13-F uses a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction for rectification. (1) Schottky Junction: A rectifying junction is formed between a metal (typically chromium or molybdenum) and N-type silicon. Unlike PN junction diodes, only majority carriers (electrons) participate in current flow. This eliminates the minority carrier storage that causes reverse recovery in PN diodes. (2) Forward Bias: When the anode (metal) is biased positive relative to the cathode (N-type silicon), electrons flow from the semiconductor into the metal with minimal energy barrier, producing the low 0.55V forward voltage. (3) Reverse Bias: When reverse biased, the Schottky barrier blocks current flow. The lower barrier height compared to PN junctions results in higher reverse leakage current (500uA max at 40V, 25C), which is the tradeoff for lower forward voltage. (4) Guard Ring: A diffused P-type guard ring surrounds the Schottky contact to protect against edge breakdown and improve ESD ruggedness. The guard ring acts as a distributed PN junction that clamps voltage excursions above the Schottky barrier rating.
