The LM25005 is a step-down switching regulator from Texas Instruments featuring all functions necessary for an efficient high-voltage buck regulator with minimum external components. It integrates a 42 V, 160 mΩ N-channel MOSFET with 2.5 A output capability. The current mode control uses an emulated current ramp for reliable operation at very small duty cycles common in high input voltage applications. The switching frequency is programmable from 50 kHz to 500 kHz via a single resistor, and an oscillator sync pin allows multiple devices to synchronize.

The LM25005 uses peak current mode control with an emulated inductor current ramp. The emulated ramp is synthesized from the input voltage and duty cycle, providing noise immunity superior to traditional current mode designs. The internal MOSFET switches the input voltage to the inductor, and the catch diode provides the freewheeling path during off-time. The feedback voltage (1.225 V reference) is compared against the output by the error amplifier, which controls the PWM comparator. The internal VCC regulator provides a 7.15 V bias rail from the high-voltage input, and transitions to LDO mode when the input drops below 9 V. Cycle-by-cycle current limiting protects the MOSFET during overload.
