The LMH1981 is a high-performance multi-format video sync separator from Texas Instruments designed for broadcast, professional video, and HDTV/DTV systems. It accepts composite, S-Video, or component video signals with bi-level or tri-level sync and extracts all critical timing signals including composite sync, horizontal sync, vertical sync, burst/back porch timing, odd/even field, and video format. The device automatically detects the input video format without requiring microcontroller programming. Precise 50% sync slicing ensures accurate extraction even with irregular input amplitude from transmission loss or improper termination.

The LMH1981 separates sync information from the input video signal through a precision slicing architecture. The input video is first DC-restored, then the sync tip is clamped and sliced at the 50% amplitude point. For bi-level sync (SD), the slicer extracts horizontal and vertical timing. For tri-level sync (HD), a dual-threshold approach identifies the sync edges. An internal PLL and line counter track the video format, outputting the total horizontal line count as an 11-bit binary serial data stream. The HSync output features very low jitter on its falling edge, reducing the need for external jitter cleanup circuitry in subsequent clock generation stages. All outputs swing rail-to-rail in CMOS logic levels.
