The Texas Instruments LP2981AIM5-3.3/NOPB is a 3.3V fixed-output ultra-low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator optimized for battery-powered and noise-sensitive applications. With only 200 mV dropout at 100 mA output and 65 uA quiescent current, this regulator maximizes battery utilization while providing a clean 3.3V supply rail. The A-grade version supports the full -40C to +125C temperature range with +/-0.75% output accuracy. The enable pin enables power gating, while the bypass pin allows an external noise-reduction capacitor for ultra-low output noise performance.

The LP2981AIM5-3.3/NOPB uses a PNP pass transistor in a low-dropout configuration. Unlike NPN-based regulators that require the input voltage to exceed the output by at least 1.5-2V, the PNP pass element allows operation with only 200 mV of headroom. A bandgap reference provides a stable voltage reference, while an error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via internal resistor divider for fixed versions) with the reference and adjusts the pass transistor drive to maintain regulation. The bypass pin allows connecting an external capacitor to the reference node, forming a low-pass filter that reduces reference noise. The enable pin controls a bias circuit that can shut down the device to 0.01 uA, and over-current/over-temperature protection ensures safe operation under fault conditions.
