The P82B715 is a bipolar I2C bus extender that supports bidirectional data transfer, allowing I2C signals to be transmitted over distances far exceeding the standard 400 pF bus capacitance limit. It achieves this through a 10x impedance transformation that effectively reduces the apparent capacitance of long cable runs. The Lx/Ly buffered bus side can handle up to 3000 pF of total capacitance, enabling cable lengths of 50 meters or more with twisted-pair wiring. No external directional control is needed as the device automatically handles the bidirectional nature of I2C communication.

The P82B715 operates as a dual bidirectional unity-voltage-gain buffer using analog current amplification. On the Sx/Sy side (local I2C bus), the device presents standard I2C input characteristics. On the Lx/Ly side (buffered/extended bus), it increases the current sink capability by a factor of 10, effectively transforming the 400 pF I2C bus specification into a 4000 pF (4 nF) bus capacitance limit. When the I2C master drives Sx/Sy low, the internal amplifier drives Lx/Ly low with 30 mA sink capability. Conversely, when a remote device on the Lx/Ly bus pulls low, the corresponding Sx/Sy line follows within 100 mV. This transparent bidirectional operation preserves all I2C modes and features without requiring any directional control signals.
