The TPS72012DRVR from Texas Instruments is a 350 mA dual-rail low-dropout linear regulator with a fixed 1.2 V output. The dual-rail architecture separates the power input (VIN) from the bias supply (VBIAS), allowing VIN to operate as low as VOUT + VDO (1.1 V minimum) while VBIAS powers the control circuitry. This configuration maximizes efficiency in systems where VIN comes from a high-efficiency DC-DC converter. The device delivers 80 dB PSRR and 48 µVRMS output noise, making it ideal for RF and noise-sensitive applications. Built-in soft start ensures monotonic output rise with inrush current limited to 100 mA plus load current. The unique light-load regulation feature maintains output even when the IN pin is floating, sourcing current from VBIAS.

The TPS72012DRVR uses a dual-rail LDO architecture where VIN carries the main load current and VBIAS powers the internal control circuitry (error amplifier, bandgap reference, protection circuits). The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage from the internal resistor divider against the bandgap reference (0.5 V) and drives the pass transistor to regulate the output at 1.2 V. The P-channel MOSFET pass element allows low dropout operation. The bias rail enables the control circuit to function even when VIN is very close to VOUT. The integrated soft-start circuit limits inrush current during power-up. Overcurrent protection limits the pass transistor gate drive when output current exceeds the safe threshold. Thermal shutdown disables the output when junction temperature exceeds 160°C. The enable pin allows the device to be shut down, reducing current to less than 1 µA.
