The Schurter PFTL series resettable PPTC fuses provide reliable overcurrent protection for high-density PCB designs. Available in a range of surface-mount footprints from 0603 to 2920, these devices automatically trip when excessive current flows, then reset once the fault condition is removed. The PFTL series offers hold currents from 0.05A to 5A and voltage ratings up to 60 VDC, making them suitable for a broad range of electronic applications from battery protection to telecommunications equipment.

The PPTC fuse operates on the principle of positive temperature coefficient behavior in a conductive polymer composite. Under normal operating conditions, the polymer matrix maintains a low-resistance conductive path through carbon or metal particle chains. When an overcurrent event occurs, the resulting Joule heating raises the polymer temperature above its crystalline transition point, causing the polymer to expand dramatically. This expansion breaks the conductive particle chains, increasing resistance by several orders of magnitude and limiting current flow. Once the fault is removed and the device cools, the polymer contracts and the conductive paths reform, restoring normal low-resistance operation.
