The ECQU2A224ML from Panasonic is a 0.22μF ±20% metallized polyester (MPET) film capacitor in the ECQUL series, rated at 275VAC and certified as Class X2 per IEC 60384-14 / EN132400 for across-the-line EMI suppression. The capacitor also carries Y2/X2 certification for line-to-ground applications. The self-healing metallized polyester dielectric provides reliable operation by clearing localized dielectric breakdowns through evaporation of the thin metallization around the fault site. The internal fuse safety mechanism isolates a faulty capacitor section, preventing catastrophic failure. The flame-retardant PBT case (UL 94V-0) and non-combustible polyurethane resin filling provide additional safety. Note: This product has been discontinued; consult Panasonic for replacement options.

The ECQU2A224ML uses a metallized polyester (MPET) dielectric construction. A thin layer of aluminum is vacuum-deposited on one side of the polyester film, and two such metallized films are wound with the metallized surfaces offset so that each extends to one edge of the winding. Zinc or zinc/tin metallic spray is applied to each end to connect all the turns of the same electrode. The self-healing property is achieved because the metallization is extremely thin (approximately 20-50nm). When a localized dielectric breakdown occurs, the arc current vaporizes the thin metallization around the fault, creating a cleared zone that isolates the defect. The capacitor continues to function with only a negligible reduction in capacitance. The internal fuse mechanism uses narrowed metallization sections that act as fuses under sustained fault conditions, disconnecting only the affected section while maintaining overall capacitor function.
