The MLX75023RTF-BAA-000-SP from Melexis is a VGA-resolution (640×480) Time-of-Flight (ToF) CMOS image sensor designed for automotive 3D depth sensing. It uses continuous wave modulation at 850nm or 940nm to measure distance per pixel with sub-1% accuracy. Capable of up to 160fps depth output via MIPI CSI-2 interface, the device supports driver monitoring (DMS), occupant classification, and gesture recognition. AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive deployment with -40°C to +105°C operating range.

The MLX75023 uses indirect Time-of-Flight (iToF) measurement where a modulated infrared light source (VCSEL at 850/940nm) illuminates the scene. The sensor pixel measures the phase shift between the emitted and received modulation, which is directly proportional to the round-trip distance. Four phase samples per pixel (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°) are used to calculate amplitude and phase, yielding both depth and intensity data. On-chip background light cancellation subtracts ambient illumination for robust outdoor operation.
