The PEC11L-4020K-S0020 from Bourns is a 20PPR incremental rotary encoder with No detent in a through-hole PC pin package. It provides quadrature output for user interface and position feedback applications.

The incremental encoder uses a coded disc with alternating transparent and opaque segments. Two photodetectors (or contact brushes) generate quadrature A and B signals offset by 90 degrees. The relative phase of A and B determines rotation direction: if A leads B, rotation is clockwise; if B leads A, rotation is counter-clockwise. Each rising/falling edge of A and B represents a count increment, providing 4x the base PPR resolution.
