The RT8532-20-2M5 from Richtek is a high-efficiency 6-string white LED driver designed for LCD panel backlight applications. It integrates a current-mode boost controller with a 200 mOhm, 43 V power MOSFET switch and six precision current sinks. Each channel supports programmable LED current from 5 mA to 50 mA with +-2% matching for uniform brightness. The device features direct PWM dimming up to 20 kHz and mixed analog/PWM dimming with up to 9-bit resolution. The built-in soft start prevents inrush current without requiring an external capacitor. Comprehensive protection includes over-voltage, over-current, string open detection, and thermal shutdown.

The RT8532-20-2M5 combines a boost DC-DC converter with six precision current sink channels. The boost converter uses current-mode control with an internal 200 mOhm N-channel MOSFET switch to step up the input voltage (2.5-24 V) to the level required by the LED strings (up to 43 V). The controller monitors the minimum voltage across all six current sink channels and dynamically adjusts the boost output voltage to maintain just enough headroom for the highest forward voltage string, maximizing efficiency. Each current sink channel regulates its LED string current using an internal reference and error amplifier. The dimming interface accepts PWM signals for brightness control and converts them to proportional LED current changes.
