The S1B is a standard P-N junction rectifier diode. (1) Forward Bias: When the anode voltage exceeds the cathode voltage by approximately 0.7V or more, the diode conducts. The forward current is limited only by the external circuit impedance, and the forward voltage drop remains relatively constant at 0.9-1.1V. The forward voltage has a negative temperature coefficient, decreasing by approximately -2mV/C as temperature increases. (2) Reverse Bias: When the cathode voltage exceeds the anode voltage (up to 100V), the diode blocks current flow. Only a small leakage current (5uA maximum) flows in the reverse direction. (3) Rectification: In AC-DC power supply applications, the diode conducts during the positive half-cycle of the AC input and blocks during the negative half-cycle, converting AC to pulsating DC. A filter capacitor smooths the pulsating DC into a relatively constant DC voltage. (4) Surge Withstand: The 50A surge rating reflects the diodes ability to absorb the energy from the initial charging of the filter capacitor after power-up.
