The SN65220DBVR from Texas Instruments is a dual unidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) designed specifically for USB port ESD protection. It protects low- and full-speed USB transceivers and ASICs from electrical noise transients sourced through cabled I/O connections. The device features low input capacitance of 35 pF typical, which preserves USB signal integrity. The 15-kV HBM ESD rating provides robust protection against electrostatic discharge events, while the 6-V stand-off voltage and 1-uA maximum leakage current ensure compatibility with both 3-V and 5-V USB logic levels.

The SN65220DBVR operates as a bidirectional clamping device for two independent signal lines. Each channel consists of a steering diode network that diverts transient currents away from the protected IC and into the ground plane. Under normal operating conditions, the TVS presents high impedance and low capacitance (35 pF) to the signal line, preserving USB signal integrity. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage (7 V), the device rapidly clamps the voltage and diverts the surge current to ground. The IEC 61000-4-2 compliance ensures protection against real-world ESD events at the system level.
