The TBU-CA065-200-WH from Bourns is a Transient Blocking Unit (TBU) high-speed protector that provides bidirectional overcurrent and overvoltage protection for sensitive electronic circuits. Unlike traditional shunt-type TVS devices that divert surge energy to ground, the TBU uses MOSFET semiconductor technology to disconnect the circuit path, blocking transients in under 1 microsecond. The device monitors line current and triggers to a high-impedance state when the current exceeds the trigger threshold (300mA), effectively creating a barrier between the surge and protected equipment. With a working voltage of 300V and clamping voltage of 650V, the TBU-CA065-200-WH is suitable for Ethernet, RS-485, and VDSL applications. The device is resettable – it automatically returns to the low-impedance state after the fault is removed and voltage drops below the reset voltage (16V). The low capacitance design allows high-speed data signals to pass through unimpeded.

The TBU-CA065-200-WH operates through three main states: (1) Normal (low-impedance) state – During normal operation, the internal MOSFET is in the on-state with an RDS(ON) of approximately 9.8 Ohm, allowing signal currents up to 200mA to pass through with minimal voltage drop. The device appears nearly transparent to the circuit, with very low capacitance that does not distort high-speed data signals. (2) Trigger (blocking) state – When a surge event causes the current through the device to exceed the trigger threshold (300mA), the internal current-sensing circuit activates the MOSFET gate drive to turn off the MOSFET. This transition occurs in less than 1 microsecond. In the blocking state, the device presents a very high impedance, limiting let-through energy to extremely low levels. The 650V clamping capability means the device can withstand voltage differences up to 650V while remaining blocked. (3) Reset state – After the surge subsides and the voltage across the device drops below the reset voltage (approximately 16V), the MOSFET automatically turns back on, restoring the normal low-impedance state. This resettable operation allows the device to survive thousands of fault events without degradation.
