The TPS60403DBVR from Texas Instruments is an unregulated charge-pump voltage inverter that generates a negative output from a positive input voltage. It operates from 1.6 V to 5.5 V and delivers up to 60 mA of output current. The charge-pump topology eliminates the need for an inductor, requiring only three small external ceramic capacitors, resulting in a compact and cost-effective solution for generating negative supply rails from single-supply systems. The fixed 20-kHz switching frequency simplifies system design and reduces EMI concerns.

The TPS60403DBVR operates as a switched-capacitor voltage inverter using a two-phase charge-pump cycle. During the first phase, the flying capacitor (CFLY) is connected between VIN and GND, charging it to the input voltage. During the second phase, the flying capacitor is reconnected with its positive terminal to GND and its negative terminal to the output. This transfers the charge from VIN to the output at an inverted polarity, producing -VIN at the output. The output voltage is unregulated and will deviate from -VIN under load due to the internal switch resistance (12 ohm typical) and capacitor ESR. The 20-kHz oscillator controls the switching phases.
