The REF3440 is a precision voltage reference from Texas Instruments that provides a stable 4.096V output with ±0.05% initial accuracy and 6 ppm/°C typical temperature drift. The device consumes only 95μA of quiescent current, making it suitable for battery-powered precision systems. Its ability to both source and sink up to 10mA allows it to drive dynamic loads such as ADC reference inputs without external buffering. The REF3440 requires no external capacitor for stability, simplifying PCB layout and reducing BOM count in space-constrained designs.

The REF3440 uses a bandgap-based voltage reference core with curvature correction to achieve low temperature drift. The core bandgap voltage is amplified and trimmed to produce the precise 4.096V output. Laser trimming at the factory ensures the ±0.05% initial accuracy specification. The output stage uses a class-AB buffer that can both source and sink current, maintaining output impedance below 0.1Ω at DC. A sleep mode (via EN pin) reduces the quiescent current to microamps when the reference is not needed. The device is stable without an output capacitor due to the internally compensated output buffer, although an external capacitor can improve noise performance and load transient response.
