The SN65LBC182P from TI is an RS-485/RS-422 fail-safe transceiver in DIP-8 package. 12Mbps data rate for high-speed industrial networks (Profibus DP). Integrated switchable 120 ohm termination eliminates external termination resistor. Fail-safe receiver ensures logic-high output on open, shorted, or idle bus. +/-16kV IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection on bus pins.

The driver converts CMOS logic to differential RS-485 levels with controlled slew rate for 12Mbps operation. The receiver has a precision threshold set slightly above 0V differential (fail-safe), so an idle bus (0V diff) is correctly received as logic-high. The integrated 120 ohm termination can be enabled/disabled via the TE (termination enable) pin. The LBC182 includesTransient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes on bus pins for +/-16kV ESD protection per IEC 61000-4-2.
