The LTC2870IUFD from Analog Devices is a multiprotocol transceiver that supports both RS485 and RS232 in a single IC. Software-selectable mode eliminates the need for separate transceivers or external muxing. RS485 mode supports up to 20 Mbps for high-speed industrial links. RS232 mode supports up to 1 Mbps. +/-15 kV ESD protection on bus pins ensures robust field operation.

An internal mux connects the driver and receiver to either the RS485 bus pins (A, B, Y, Z) or the RS232 bus pins depending on the MODE pin. In RS485 mode, the differential driver and receiver operate with standard 120-ohm bus termination. In RS232 mode, single-ended drivers and receivers operate with +/-5.5V output levels. The 1uA shutdown mode powers down all circuitry for battery backup.
