The MPU-6050 from InvenSense (TDK) is a 6-axis MotionTracking device that integrates a 3-axis MEMS gyroscope and 3-axis MEMS accelerometer on a single silicon die, connected to an integrated Digital Motion Processor (DMP) via an internal sensor bus. The gyroscope is programmable to +/-250, +/-500, +/-1000, or +/-2000 deg/s full-scale range, and the accelerometer to +/-2g, +/-4g, +/-8g, or +/-16g. Each axis is digitized by a 16-bit ADC. The DMP executes sensor fusion algorithms, offloading computation from the host processor. An auxiliary I2C master bus allows connection of a 3-axis magnetometer for 9-axis sensor fusion. The 1024-byte FIFO buffers sensor data, reducing I2C bus traffic and host polling. The device operates from 2.375V to 3.46V with 3.9mA total current.

The MPU-6050 integrates MEMS sensors, ADCs, and a motion processor. (1) Gyroscope: Three MEMS vibratory gyroscopes use the Coriolis effect. When an angular rate is applied to a vibrating proof mass, the Coriolis force causes displacement perpendicular to both the vibration and the rotation axis. This displacement is measured capacitively, producing a voltage proportional to angular rate. (2) Accelerometer: Three MEMS accelerometers use capacitive sensing of proof mass displacement under acceleration. Each axis measures the inertial force along one direction, including gravity. (3) ADC: Each sensor output is digitized by a 16-bit sigma-delta ADC with configurable sample rate up to 8kHz (gyro) and 4kHz (accel). (4) DMP: The Digital Motion Processor executes firmware that performs sensor fusion (complementary or Kalman filter), quaternion computation, tap detection, and orientation estimation. Processed data is written to the FIFO for host retrieval. (5) Auxiliary I2C: A secondary I2C master reads external magnetometer data for 9-axis fusion.
