The NUD4700SNT1G from onsemi is an electronic shunt protector designed to provide a current bypass path when a single LED in a series string goes open-circuit. Placed in parallel with each LED, it remains in a high-impedance off-state under normal operation (breakdown voltage 5.5-7.5V exceeds LED forward voltage). When the LED fails open, the voltage across the shunt rises until it breaks down, conducting current with only 1V on-state voltage and maintaining string continuity. The device automatically resets if the LED heals. AEC-Q101 qualified for automotive applications.

The NUD4700 is a two-terminal thyristor-based shunt device. In normal operation, the LED forward voltage (typically 3V) is below the shunt breakdown voltage (5.5-7.5V), so the shunt draws minimal off-state current (less than 250µA). When the LED fails open, the full string current forces the voltage across the parallel shunt to rise. Once the breakdown voltage is reached, the shunt triggers and latches on, providing a low-impedance bypass path with approximately 1V drop. The holding current (6mA) and latching current (35mA) ensure stable on-state operation at typical LED drive currents.
