The TPS62842DGR from Texas Instruments is an ultra-low quiescent current step-down DC-DC converter designed for battery-powered applications that spend most of their time in sleep mode. The 60 nA quiescent current in standby mode is among the lowest in the industry, extending battery life by months or years in always-on systems. The device supports input voltages from 1.8V to 6.5V (covering single-cell Li-ion and 2-4 cell alkaline), with output current up to 750mA for peak processing loads. The DCS-Control (Direct Control with Seamless transition) architecture provides fast transient response with seamless transition between PWM and PFM modes. The 1.8 MHz switching frequency minimizes inductor size. The VSSOP-8 package provides a compact footprint suitable for space-constrained wearable and IoT designs.

The TPS62842DGR uses TI’s DCS-Control architecture, which combines voltage-mode control with a direct feedback path for fast transient response. In PWM mode (medium to heavy loads), the converter operates at a fixed 1.8 MHz frequency with pulse-width modulation for low output ripple. In light-load conditions, the converter transitions seamlessly to PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) mode, where switching pulses are issued only when the output voltage drops below the threshold, minimizing switching losses. In deep sleep mode (output current near zero), the 60 nA Iq is achieved by shutting down all non-essential internal circuits while maintaining the output voltage regulation through infrequent single pulses. The DCS-Control uses the output voltage ripple as a natural ramp for the comparator, eliminating the need for external compensation and providing a direct path from output to the PWM comparator for sub-microsecond transient response. The integrated synchronous rectifier replaces the external Schottky diode, improving efficiency especially at low output voltages.
