The BlueNRG-M2SA is a Bluetooth Low Energy system-on-chip application processor certified module from STMicroelectronics. It is certified under Bluetooth LE specifications v5.2 and is BQE qualified. The module is based on the BlueNRG-2 SoC, featuring an ultra-low-power Cortex-M0 32-bit core with 256 kB of programmable Flash memory and 24 kB of RAM with data retention. The entire Bluetooth LE stack and protocols are embedded in the module. The BlueNRG-M2SA provides a complete RF platform in a tiny form factor, integrating the radio, chip antenna, high-frequency oscillators, and matched balun (BALF-NRG-02D3) with harmonic filter. It can be powered directly from a pair of AAA batteries or any source from 1.7V to 3.6V.
The BlueNRG-M2SA operates through four key subsystems:
1. Processing Core: An ARM Cortex-M0 32-bit RISC core runs at up to 32 MHz, executing both the Bluetooth LE protocol stack and user application code. The 256 kB Flash stores firmware and application code, while 24 kB RAM holds runtime data with retention in low-power modes.
2. RF Transceiver: The 2.4 GHz radio supports Bluetooth LE modulation with output power up to +8 dBm and -88 dBm receiver sensitivity, achieving a 96 dB link budget. The embedded BALF-NRG-02D3 balun provides impedance matching and harmonic filtering. An on-board chip antenna radiates the RF signal.
3. Low-Power Management: A 32 kHz crystal oscillator enables ultra-low-power BLE sleep modes. An integrated SMPS inductor reduces active-mode current consumption. The module supports multiple low-power states including sleep with RAM retention.
4. Peripheral Interfaces: The module exposes UART, I2C, SPI, 14 GPIOs, two multifunction timers, a 10-bit ADC, DMA controller, watchdog, RTC, and SWD debug interface. An AES-128 hardware co-processor handles encryption for LE Secure Connections.
