The ISO3086 is an isolated full-duplex RS-485 and RS-422 transceiver designed for TIA/EIA-485 applications requiring galvanic isolation. The symmetrical isolation barrier is tested to provide 2500V RMS isolation for 60 seconds per UL 1577 between the bus transceiver and logic interface. With signaling rates up to 20 Mbps, 1/8 unit load for 256-node bus support, and fail-safe receiver design, the device is ideal for long transmission lines in harsh industrial environments. The T suffix variant operates over the -40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range.

The ISO3086 integrates an RS-485/RS-422 differential driver and receiver with a galvanic isolation barrier. The logic side (VCC1) connects to the host controller, while the bus side (VCC2) connects to the RS-485 bus. The isolation barrier is constructed using a thick-film capacitive coupling technology that transmits signals across the barrier while blocking DC and low-frequency common-mode voltages. In full-duplex mode, the driver (D, DE pins) and receiver (R, RE pins) operate independently. The driver converts single-ended logic signals into differential bus signals, while the receiver converts differential bus signals back to single-ended logic. The fail-safe receiver ensures a logic-high output when the bus is open, shorted, or idle (all transmitters off).
