The L5973D013TR is a step-down monolithic power switching regulator from STMicroelectronics capable of delivering more than 2A DC current to the load. The device uses an internal P-channel D-MOS transistor with a typical Rds(on) of 250 mΩ as the switching element, minimizing external component size. The output voltage is adjustable from 1.235V to 35V. A minimum input voltage of 4V makes it particularly suitable for 5V bus applications. The HSOP-8 package with exposed pad reduces thermal resistance to approximately 40°C/W, enabling high-current operation without external heat sinking. The L5973D013TR is the tape & reel packaged version of the L5973D.

The L5973D operates through four key subsystems:

1. Power Stage: An internal P-channel D-MOS transistor switches the input voltage to an external LC filter. The transistor has a typical Rds(on) of 250 mΩ. The device supports 100% duty cycle operation for low dropout conditions.

2. Control Loop: A transconductance error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (FB pin) with an internal 1.235V bandgap reference. The error signal modulates the PWM comparator, which sets the duty cycle. Voltage feedforward compensates for input voltage variations, ensuring constant loop gain.

3. Oscillator & Synchronization: An internal sawtooth oscillator generates the 250 kHz switching frequency. The SYNC pin allows external synchronization up to 500 kHz or master-slave configuration of multiple regulators.

4. Protection Circuits: Pulse-by-pulse current limiting protects against overloads, while a frequency foldback mechanism reduces switching frequency under severe short-circuit conditions. Thermal shutdown disables the device if junction temperature exceeds safe limits. An INH pin enables zero-current standby mode.
