The LAN9252TI/ML is a 2-port EtherCAT Slave Controller (ESC) from Microchip with two integrated 10/100Mbps Ethernet PHYs, designed for real-time industrial Ethernet communication in EtherCAT networks. It supports distributed clocks for sub-microsecond synchronization, FMMU (Fieldbus Memory Management Unit) for flexible logical-to-physical address mapping, and SyncManager for synchronized data exchange. Multiple host interfaces (SPI, 8/16-bit parallel, I2C) connect to any local MCU/MPU. The 64-pin QFN (9x9mm) package with industrial temperature range suits demanding factory automation environments.

The LAN9252 implements the EtherCAT slave protocol at the hardware level. Incoming EtherCAT frames are processed on-the-fly by the processing unit: the frame header is read, FMMU mappings translate logical addresses to physical process data RAM locations, and data is read or written without buffering the entire frame. Distributed clocks synchronize the local clock with the master’s reference clock for precise timing of input/output sampling. The SyncManager controls the handshake between the EtherCAT master and the local application, ensuring consistent data access. Integrated PHYs handle 100BASE-TX physical layer encoding/decoding, eliminating external PHY components.
