The MAL215371479E3 uses metallized polyester film construction where a thin aluminum layer is vacuum-deposited onto a polyester (PET) film substrate. Two layers are wound or stacked to form the capacitor. The self-healing mechanism operates when a localized dielectric breakdown occurs; the resulting arc heats and vaporizes the thin metallization around the fault point, electrically isolating it while the rest of the capacitor continues to function.
