The Microchip MIC5209-3.3YSTR is an efficient linear voltage regulator with very low dropout voltage and better than 1% output voltage accuracy. Designed especially for handheld, battery-powered devices, the MIC5209 features low ground current to prolong battery life. An enable/shutdown pin can further improve battery life with near-zero shutdown current. Key features include reversed-battery protection, current limiting, overtemperature shutdown, and ultra-low-noise capability when used with an external bypass capacitor on the BYP pin.

The MIC5209-3.3YSTR operates as a series-pass linear regulator. 1) Reference Subsystem: A precision bandgap reference provides a stable 1.2V reference voltage, trimmed for better than 1% accuracy. 2) Error Amplifier Subsystem: Compares the feedback voltage (from the internal resistor divider setting 3.3V output) with the reference, driving the pass transistor to regulate the output. 3) Pass Element Subsystem: A PNP pass transistor provides low dropout operation; the dropout voltage is the saturation voltage of this transistor, typically 350mV at 500mA. 4) Noise Reduction Subsystem: The BYP pin connects an external capacitor to the reference voltage node, filtering reference noise for ultra-low output noise performance. 5) Protection Subsystem: Current limiting, thermal shutdown, and reverse-battery protection circuitry safeguard the device under fault conditions.
