The MP1657GTF-Z from Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) is a 16V, 2A synchronous step-down converter in an ultra-compact SOT-563-6 package. Operating from 4.5V to 16V input, it provides an adjustable output from 0.8V to 10V at up to 2A. The 800kHz switching frequency allows use of small inductors and capacitors, and the 190uA typical quiescent current preserves battery life in portable applications. Integrated power MOSFETs and internal compensation minimize external component count. Protection features include overcurrent protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), undervoltage protection (UVP), and thermal shutdown with auto-recovery. Internal 1.0ms soft-start prevents inrush current.

The MP1657GTF-Z uses a constant-on-time (COT) control topology. (1) COT Control: A constant on-time controller adjusts the off-time to regulate the output voltage. The on-time is set proportional to VOUT/VIN to maintain approximately 800kHz switching frequency. (2) Power Stage: Integrated high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs provide synchronous rectification. The low-side MOSFET operates in discontinuous mode at light loads for high efficiency. (3) Soft-Start: Internal 1.0ms soft-start ramps the reference voltage from 0V to the target, limiting inrush current during startup. (4) Protection: Cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection limits the peak inductor current. The device enters hiccup mode under sustained short circuit. Thermal shutdown disables the converter at approximately 160C and recovers at 140C.
