The MP9942GJ-Z is a high-frequency, synchronous, rectified, step-down switch-mode converter with built-in power MOSFETs from Monolithic Power Systems (MPS). It offers a very compact solution to achieve 2A continuous output current with excellent load and line regulation over a wide 4V to 36V input supply range. The MP9942 operates in synchronous mode for higher efficiency across the full output current range. Current-mode control provides fast transient response and eases loop stabilization. The device integrates 90mΩ high-side and 55mΩ low-side power MOSFETs for high efficiency. Key features include internal soft-start to limit inrush current, power good (PG) indicator for power sequencing, over-current protection with hiccup mode recovery, and thermal shutdown. The switching frequency is fixed at 410kHz and can be synchronized to an external clock from 200kHz to 2.2MHz via the EN/SYNC pin. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.8V up to 32.4V via external resistors. The MP9942 is available in an 8-pin TSOT-23 package and is suitable for a wide range of applications including industrial, automotive, consumer, and networking power supplies.

The MP9942 operates as a peak-current-mode controlled synchronous buck converter. Each switching cycle begins with the internal clock turning on the high-side (HS) MOSFET, allowing current to flow from VIN through the inductor to the output capacitor and load. The inductor current ramps up, and when it reaches the level set by the error amplifier output (COMP), the HS MOSFET turns off and the low-side (LS) MOSFET turns on. During this phase, the inductor current ramps down as it flows through the LS MOSFET. The LS MOSFET remains on until the next clock cycle. The output voltage is sensed via the FB pin and compared to an internal 0.8V reference by the error amplifier. The error amplifier output controls the peak inductor current, providing voltage regulation. For light loads, the device enters AAM (Advanced Asynchronous Modulation) power-save mode to maintain high efficiency. Synchronization to an external clock is possible via the EN/SYNC pin. Internal soft-start gradually increases the output voltage during startup to limit inrush current. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit with hiccup recovery for short circuits and thermal shutdown for over-temperature protection.
