The PCM1840 is a high-performance Burr-Brown audio ADC from Texas Instruments supporting up to four analog channels of simultaneous sampling. It supports differential line and microphone inputs with 2 VRMS full-scale signal, integrates microphone bias voltage, PLL, and DC removal HPF, and supports up to 192 kHz sampling rate. The device supports TDM, I2S, or LJ audio formats with hardware pin-level selectability. Master/slave mode selection enables flexible audio bus interface operation. These integrated high-performance features, along with single 3.3 V supply operation, make it ideal for far-field microphone recording in cost-sensitive, space-constrained audio systems.

The PCM1840 employs a multi-bit delta-sigma ADC architecture with integrated analog and digital decimation filtering. Each of the four input channels has a dedicated delta-sigma modulator that oversamples the input signal and produces a 1-bit data stream. The digital decimation filter then converts this to 32-bit output data with selectable linear-phase or low-latency characteristics. An integrated PLL generates all required clock signals from a single master clock input, eliminating external clock generation. The Dynamic Range Enhancer (DRE) adaptively adjusts the front-end gain to extend the effective dynamic range to 123 dB. A fixed high-pass IIR filter removes DC offset at 0.00025 × fS. The serial audio interface supports master or slave mode with I2S, LJ, or TDM formats.
