The SN65HVD34DR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3V full-duplex RS-485 transceiver with 5Mbps signaling rate in a 14-pin SOIC package. The device features independent active-high driver enable (DE) and active-low receiver enable (RE) for full-duplex communication. As a 1/8 unit load device, it supports up to 256 nodes on a single RS-485 bus. Built-in fault protection covers -9V to +14V on bus pins with >15kV HBM ESD rating. Fail-safe receiver ensures known output state for idle, open, or shorted bus conditions. Hot-plug capable with <1uA standby current.

The SN65HVD34 uses a differential driver output stage that converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-485 differential signals (A/B pair). The differential receiver converts the bus differential voltage back to single-ended logic. When both DE and RE are disabled, the device enters <1uA standby mode. The driver includes output current limiting (250mA per RS-485 spec) and thermal shutdown for bus contention protection. The receiver incorporates a fail-safe bias network that forces the output high when the differential input voltage is between -200mV and +200mV (idle, open, or shorted bus). Hot-plug circuitry ensures glitch-free output during power-up and power-down transients.
