The ST16C550CJ is a universal asynchronous receiver and transmitter (UART) from Exar (MaxLinear) with 16-byte transmit and receive FIFOs. It is pin-to-pin compatible with the industry standard 16C550. The CJ suffix denotes a 44-pin PLCC package for commercial temperature range (0°C to +70°C). Supports data rates up to 1.5Mbps at 5V operation.

The ST16C550 operates on a 16C550 compatible architecture. It converts parallel data from the CPU bus into serial data for transmission, and converts received serial data back into parallel form. The 16-byte FIFOs reduce CPU interrupt overhead compared to the 16C450. A programmable baud rate generator divides the input clock to generate standard and custom baud rates from 50bps to 1.5Mbps.
