The TPS72201 is a low-input-voltage, capacitor-free low-dropout linear regulator designed for portable and battery-powered applications. It supports an input voltage range from 1.8V to 5.5V and provides up to 50 mA of output current with an adjustable output voltage set by an external resistor divider from 1.22V to 2.5V. The extremely low dropout voltage of 50 mV typical at full load makes it suitable for applications where the input-to-output differential is minimal. The device is stable with very small ceramic output capacitors (0.1 µF minimum), enabling compact PCB layouts in space-constrained designs.

The TPS72201 uses a PMOS pass transistor in a voltage-follower configuration. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (sensed through the FB pin via an external resistor divider) with the internal 1.22V bandgap reference. The amplifier output drives the gate of the PMOS pass transistor to regulate the output voltage. The low dropout voltage is achieved because the PMOS transistor operates as a variable resistor — it only requires a small VGS overdrive to pass current, unlike NMOS LDOs that need a headroom voltage for the gate drive. The enable (EN) pin controls the pass transistor gate; when EN is low, the device enters shutdown mode with less than 1 µA quiescent current. The internal current limit and thermal shutdown circuits protect the device from overload conditions.
