The VO618A-3X017T is a zero-crossing triac driver optocoupler from Vishay designed for AC power control applications. It combines a GaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a zero-crossing triac driver chip with 600V peak blocking voltage, suitable for 240VAC mains operation. The zero-crossing detector ensures the triac turns on only when the AC voltage is near zero, reducing inrush current and EMI. The grade 3 variant has a maximum LED trigger current of 5mA, compatible with MCU GPIO outputs. The 5300VRMS isolation voltage provides safe galvanic separation between control and power circuits. The device directly drives the gate of external power triacs rated up to 25A.

The VO618A-3X017T consists of a GaAs IR LED optically coupled to a silicon detector chip with integrated zero-crossing detector and triac driver. When the LED is forward-biased, infrared radiation activates the detector. The zero-crossing circuit monitors the voltage across the output terminals; when this voltage is below the inhibit threshold (≤20V), the detector triggers the driver triac, which in turn provides gate current to the external power triac. When the AC line voltage exceeds 20V, the zero-crossing detector prevents triggering, waiting until the next zero crossing. This synchronized turn-on minimizes the rate of current change (di/dt) through the load, reducing electromagnetic interference and inrush current stress on the power triac. The 600V blocking capability allows direct connection to 240VAC mains with appropriate safety margins. The 5300VRMS isolation is achieved through optical coupling with no electrical path between LED and detector, ensuring safe separation even during high-voltage fault conditions.
