The MAX3221CAE+T is a 1-driver/1-receiver RS-232 transceiver with Maxim’s revolutionary AutoShutdown feature. When the device does not sense a valid signal level on its receiver inputs for 30 µs, the onboard power supply and drivers shut down, reducing supply current to 1 µA. The system automatically turns on again when a valid RS-232 level is applied to the receiver input. A proprietary, high-efficiency, dual charge-pump power supply and low-dropout transmitter combine to deliver true RS-232 performance from a single +3.0 V to +5.5 V supply. The device requires only 0.1 µF capacitors in 3.3 V operation.

The MAX3221 uses an integrated dual charge-pump circuit to generate ±5.5 V RS-232 voltage levels from a single +3.0 V to +5.5 V supply. The first charge pump doubles the supply voltage to approximately +5.5 V (V+), while the second inverts this to approximately -5.5 V (V-). The transmitter converts TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 compliant levels using these generated voltages. The receiver converts RS-232 input levels to TTL/CMOS output levels with 300 mV hysteresis for noise immunity. The AutoShutdown circuit monitors receiver inputs; if no valid RS-232 signal is detected for 30 µs, it disables the charge pumps and drivers to save power. The FORCEON and FORCEOFF pins provide manual override of the automatic shutdown. The INVALID output indicates whether a valid RS-232 signal is present.

The MAX3221 is a 1Tx/1Rx 3.3V RS-232 transceiver with 1uA auto-powerdown feature. For multi-port applications, MAX3232 (2Tx/2Rx) or MAX3243 (3Tx/5Rx) provide additional channels. All are 3V-5.5V compatible and require only four 0.1uF charge pump capacitors.
