The oscillator integrates a quartz crystal tuned to 14.31818MHz with a CMOS maintenance circuit. The 14.31818MHz frequency was chosen as the PC AT master clock because it can be divided by 3 to yield 4.77MHz (original PC clock), divided by 12 for 1.19318MHz (8254 PIT timer input), and multiplied by various ratios to generate VGA pixel clocks (25.175MHz, 28.322MHz).
