The 1N5359B-TP from Micro Commercial Components is a 24V, 5W Zener voltage regulator diode in a DO-15 (T-18) axial-leaded glass package. Part of the JEDEC-registered 1N5333B-1N5388B series covering 3.3V to 200V, this device features +/-5% tolerance, a maximum Zener impedance of 3.5 Ohms, and low reverse leakage of 500 nA at 18.2V. The 5W power dissipation rating with adequate heat sinking makes it suitable for power regulation and surge suppression applications. The void-free thermosetting epoxy encapsulation meets UL94V-0 flammability requirements, and the Level 1 moisture classification eliminates the need for dry-pack storage.

The 1N5359B-TP operates in the reverse avalanche breakdown region. When the reverse voltage across the diode exceeds 24V (within +/-5%), the device enters breakdown and conducts heavily, maintaining a relatively constant voltage across its terminals. The low Zener impedance of 3.5 Ohms ensures that the terminal voltage remains stable over a wide range of operating currents. At 24V, the breakdown is dominated by the avalanche mechanism, which has a positive temperature coefficient. The 5W power dissipation capability requires proper heat sinking through the lead frame, with the device rated for full power when lead temperature is kept below 25degC at 3/8 inch from the body. For higher ambient temperatures, power must be derated at 40 mW/degC above 25degC lead temperature.
