The A030900-3 is a SIDACtor® (Silicon Diode for Alternating Current) overvoltage protection device from Littelfuse’s high-power protection thyristor family. This crowbar-type protection device features a 90V stand-off voltage rating with a 115V typical switching voltage, designed to provide robust surge protection for circuits operating at lower voltage levels. Capable of handling up to 3000A of peak pulse current (8×20µs waveform), it offers superior protection against lightning-induced transients and other high-energy voltage surges. The device uses a four-layer PNPN thyristor structure that breaks over when the voltage exceeds its breakover threshold, clamping the transient to a very low on-state voltage (typically 3V) to divert massive surge energy away from protected circuitry. Packaged in a TO-220 form factor for through-hole mounting, it is suitable for applications requiring high surge handling capability in a compact package. The A030900-3 provides bidirectional protection and is ideal for use in telecommunications equipment, industrial control systems, power supplies, and energy metering applications.

The A030900-3 SIDACtor operates as a bidirectional thyristor-based overvoltage protection device using a crowbar clamping mechanism. Its structure consists of four alternating semiconductor layers (PNPN) forming a thyristor without an external gate terminal. Under normal operating conditions (voltage below VDRM), the device is in its high-impedance off state, drawing only minimal leakage current. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakover voltage (VBO), the device enters a negative resistance region and rapidly transitions to its low-impedance on-state, effectively ‘crowbarring’ the voltage to a very low level (VT ~ 3V). This crowbar action allows extremely high surge currents to be safely diverted away from the protected circuitry. Because the device is bidirectional, it protects against both positive and negative polarity transients, making it suitable for AC line applications. Once triggered, the SIDACtor remains in conduction until the current through it drops below the holding current (IH), at which point it automatically resets and returns to its blocking state. The very low on-state voltage means the device dissipates relatively little power even during high-current surge events, enabling it to handle very high energy levels. The fast response time (nanosecond-scale) ensures that voltage transients are clamped before they can damage sensitive components.
