The DP83822 is an ultra-robust, low-power single-port 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PHY from Texas Instruments designed for harsh industrial environments. It supports 100BASE-FX fiber, 100BASE-TX copper, and 10BASE-Te over twisted-pair cables, with flexible MAC connectivity via MII, RMII, or RGMII interfaces. The device provides 8 kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact ESD protection, IEC 61000-4-4 EFT Class A at 4 kV, and CISPR 22 Class B emissions compliance. Power options include single 1.8V supply (< 120 mW) or 3.3V supply (< 220 mW), with IEEE 802.3az EEE for additional savings. Integrated diagnostics, BIST, and WoL simplify system design.

The DP83822 implements a complete Ethernet physical layer transceiver. The 100BASE-TX transmitter uses 4B/5B encoding and MLT-3 signaling at 125 MHz, while the 100BASE-FX transmitter uses NRZ encoding for fiber links. The receiver includes adaptive equalization and clock/data recovery. The 10BASE-Te mode uses Manchester encoding at 10 MHz. Auto-negotiation determines the optimal link speed and duplex mode. The MAC interface block translates between the internal MII bus and the external MII/RMII/RGMII bus. Register access is via the MDIO/MDC management interface. Cable diagnostics use TDR (time-domain reflectometry) to detect open/short faults.
