An ESD protection diode operates on the principle of avalanche breakdown and Zener action to divert potentially damaging transient currents away from sensitive components. Under normal operating conditions (below the working voltage), the diode has very high impedance with minimal leakage current, effectively acting as an open circuit that does not affect circuit operation. When an ESD event or transient voltage spike occurs that exceeds the breakdown voltage, the diode rapidly enters avalanche breakdown mode (< 1ns response time), providing a low-impedance path that diverts the surge current to ground. The low clamping voltage ensures that the protected component never sees a voltage higher than the clamp level. For bidirectional devices, this protection works for both positive and negative transients. Once the transient passes, the diode automatically resets to its high-impedance state.
