A hardware AES-128 coprocessor accelerates security operations for Zigbee’s security requirements. Available in a compact 40-pin HVQFN package (5x5mm), the JN5169 is ideal for smart home, smart energy, building automation, and other IoT wireless applications.

The JN5169 operates as a fully integrated wireless microcontroller combining a 32-bit CPU, memory, peripherals, and RF transceiver. Its architecture includes: 1) 32-bit RISC CPU Core: The processor executes variable-width instructions from an internal multi-stage pipeline, achieving high code density and efficient execution. Clock speed is software-programmable, allowing dynamic power/performance optimization. The CPU includes hardware multiply and other enhanced instructions for DSP-like operations. 2) Memory Subsystem: 512 KB of embedded Flash stores program code and permanent data. 32 KB of RAM provides working memory for the application stack and heap. 4 KB of dedicated EEPROM stores non-volatile configuration data and network parameters. Memory can be accessed by the CPU or by DMA for efficient data movement. 3) IEEE 802.15.4 RF Transceiver: The 2.4 GHz RF transceiver supports the IEEE 802.15.4 standard with O-QPSK modulation at 250 kbps. The receiver uses a direct-conversion architecture with excellent sensitivity. The transmitter includes a programmable power amplifier with output levels from -30 dBm to +10 dBm. A hardware MAC accelerator handles time-critical MAC layer operations, reducing CPU loading. 4) Peripheral Subsystem: The JN5169 integrates a rich set of peripherals including two UARTs, an I2C bus interface, an SPI bus interface (master/slave), a 6-channel 10-bit ADC with temperature sensor and battery monitor, up to 5 PWM/timer units, and a large number of configurable digital I/O pins. The AES-128 hardware coprocessor provides fast cryptographic operations for Zigbee security. 5) Power Management: Multiple low-power modes are available, including deep sleep with RAM retention and sleep timer operation. The device can wake from sleep via timer, external interrupt, or RF activity detection, enabling ultra-low average power consumption for battery-operated devices.
