The KSZ8041NL supports both MII and RMII interfaces, offering flexibility for connection to various MAC/controller devices. HP Auto MDI/MDI-X technology eliminates the need for crossover cables by automatically detecting and correcting cable wiring configurations. The device features advanced power management including power-down mode and power-saving modes, with total power consumption under 180mW, making it suitable for power-sensitive and portable applications. Integrated 1.8V regulator allows operation from a single 3.3V supply, reducing external component count and system cost. The KSZ8041NL includes LinkMD® TDR-based cable diagnostics for detecting cable faults, programmable LED outputs for status indication, and an interrupt pin for system event notification. The MIIM management interface supports access to all PHY control and status registers. Available in commercial (0°C to 70°C) and industrial/automotive (-40°C to 85°C) temperature grades, the KSZ8041NL is ideal for printers, IP phones, set-top boxes, game consoles, industrial controls, and other 10/100 Ethernet applications.

The KSZ8041NL operates as a complete 10/100 Ethernet physical layer transceiver with MII/RMII interface. Its architecture consists of: 1) MII/RMII Interface: The device supports both Media Independent Interface (MII) and Reduced MII (RMII) for connecting to the MAC layer. The MII interface uses separate transmit and receive data buses (4 bits each) with associated clock and control signals. The RMII interface reduces pin count by using a 2-bit wide data path with a 50MHz reference clock. The interface mode is configured via strap pins at power-up. 2) 100Base-TX Transmitter: The transmit path accepts 4-bit nibble data from the MAC at 25MHz (MII mode), performs parallel-to-serial conversion, 4B/5B encoding, NRZ-to-NRZI conversion, and MLT-3 line coding before driving the differential output onto the twisted-pair cable via an external magnetic transformer. The transmitter includes adaptive equalization and waveform shaping for optimal signal quality. 3) 100Base-TX Receiver: The receive path performs MLT-3 decoding, clock and data recovery, NRZI-to-NRZ conversion, 4B/5B decoding, and serial-to-parallel conversion to reconstruct the 4-bit nibble data for the MAC. The receiver includes adaptive equalization to compensate for cable attenuation at 100m distances. HP Auto MDI/MDI-X automatically swaps transmit/receive pairs if needed. 4) 10Base-T Transceiver: For 10Mbps operation, the device uses Manchester encoding/decoding with the standard 10Base-T signaling. The same twisted-pair interface is shared between 10Mbps and 100Mbps modes, with automatic speed detection via auto-negotiation. 5) Management and Control: The MIIM (MDC/MDIO) interface provides access to IEEE standard PHY registers (0-31) as well as vendor-specific extended registers. Auto-negotiation automatically selects the best common speed and duplex mode with the link partner.
