Product Overview
The MC14040BDR2G from onsemi is a 12-stage binary ripple counter in the 4000B CMOS family. It counts in binary from 0 to 4095 (2^12-1) on each rising edge of the clock input. Features a master reset (MR) that clears all stages asynchronously. Wide 3V-15V supply range suits battery-powered and industrial systems. SOIC-16 package.

Working Principle
The MC14040B consists of 12 T-type flip-flops connected in a ripple (asynchronous) cascade. Each flip-flop toggles on the falling edge of the previous stage output. The clock input feeds the first stage; subsequent stages are clocked by the complementary output of the preceding stage. Master Reset (MR) overrides all stages, forcing outputs low when asserted high. Being 4000B CMOS, it offers very low static power consumption and wide supply voltage tolerance.
Applications
- Frequency dividers
- Time-delay circuits
- Binary counting
- Event counters
