The MMBT3906 is a general-purpose PNP switching transistor in a SOT-23 surface-mount package. The MMBT3906 is the industry-standard PNP general-purpose switching transistor in a SOT-23 surface-mount package, and the complementary pair to the equally ubiquitous MMBT3904 (NPN). It is one of the most widely used discrete transistors in electronics, found in virtually every category of product from consumer electronics to industrial systems.

The device features a VCEO of -40 V and IC of -200 mA, covering the majority of low-power switching and signal amplification needs. The hFE ranges from 100 to 300 at IC = -10 mA (Class A grade), providing ample gain for small-signal applications. At higher currents (IC = -100 mA), hFE drops to a minimum of 30, which must be accounted for in saturated switching designs.

The transition frequency of 250 MHz makes the MMBT3906 suitable for RF and high-speed switching applications up to approximately 25 MHz (1/10 of fT as a practical rule). Switching times are fast: 35 ns delay, 35 ns rise, 225 ns storage, and 75 ns fall at IC = -10 mA.

The SOT-23 package is the smallest common transistor footprint, measuring just 2.9 x 1.3 mm. The 250-mW power dissipation (at 25°C ambient on standard FR4) limits the device to small-signal and low-power switching. For higher power, the through-hole 2N3906 (TO-92) or SOT-223 variants are available.

The MMBT3906 is a multi-source component available from Nexperia, Diodes Inc, onsemi, Infineon, and many others. AEC-Q101 qualified variants (MMBT3906Q or MMBT3906-Q) are available from most manufacturers for automotive applications. The device is also available in tape-and-reel packaging (3,000 units per 7-inch reel) for automated assembly.

**PNP Bipolar Junction Transistor:** The MMBT3906 uses a planar epitaxial PNP structure. Current flows from emitter (P) to collector (P) when the base (N) is biased negative relative to the emitter. Base current modulates the collector current with a gain factor hFE. In the active region, IC = hFE × IB; in saturation, VCE drops to VCE(sat) (typically -250 mV at IC = -10 mA, IB = -1 mA).

**Switching Operation:** For saturated switching, the base is overdriven (IB > IC/hFE) to minimize VCE(sat) and power dissipation. Turn-on delay and rise time are dominated by base charge storage buildup. Turn-off involves removing stored base charge (storage time, 225 ns) followed by collector current fall (fall time, 75 ns). A reverse base current (IB2) speeds up turn-off by actively removing stored charge.

**Amplifier Operation:** In the linear region, the MMBT3906 provides voltage amplification when biased with a collector load resistor. The 250-MHz fT and low noise figure (4 dB at IC = -100 µA) make it suitable for audio and IF amplifier stages. The hFE variation (100-300) requires careful bias design, typically using emitter degeneration or feedback to stabilize the operating point.
