The RE46C100S8TF from Microchip is a dual horn driver IC designed specifically for driving piezoelectric sounders in smoke and CO detector applications. Two outputs drive the piezo transducer in push-pull for maximum sound output. 100nA standby current preserves battery life in smoke detectors that must operate for years on a 9V battery.

The dual outputs HB and HS drive the piezoelectric transducer in complementary push-pull mode. When horn enable is active, the internal oscillator alternately drives HB high/HS low then HB low/HS high, creating a full-bridge drive that doubles the voltage across the piezo for maximum sound pressure. The 100nA standby current is achieved by completely disabling internal circuitry when not in alarm.
