The SDM10K45-7-F from Diodes Incorporated is a surface-mount Schottky barrier diode rated at 45V and 100mA in a compact SOD-323 package. The Schottky barrier construction provides an ultra-low forward voltage drop of 450 mV at 10 mA, significantly reducing conduction losses compared to standard silicon PN junction diodes. This makes it particularly attractive for battery-powered applications where every millivolt of voltage drop translates to reduced operating time. The 45V reverse voltage rating supports common 24V and 36V industrial rails, while the zero reverse recovery time of the Schottky junction eliminates switching losses in high-frequency applications.

The SDM10K45-7-F uses a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction rather than a PN junction. The Schottky barrier is formed by the contact between a metal (typically platinum or titanium tungsten) and an N-type semiconductor region. Under forward bias, electrons flow from the semiconductor into the metal with very little energy barrier, resulting in the low 450 mV forward voltage drop. Unlike PN junction diodes, the Schottky junction is a majority-carrier device with essentially zero stored minority charge, which means there is no reverse recovery time. The device transitions instantly from conduction to blocking when the bias reverses. The higher reverse leakage current (1 uA at 10V) compared to PN diodes is an inherent characteristic of the Schottky barrier.
