The TLP291(GB-TPSE(T from Toshiba is a general-purpose phototransistor output optocoupler housed in a 2.3mm low-profile SO4 surface-mount package. It consists of a gallium arsenide infrared emitting diode (LED) optically coupled to a silicon phototransistor detector. The GB rank provides a current transfer ratio (CTR) of 100% to 600% at IF=5mA and VCE=5V, making it suitable for applications requiring high output current. The device features a minimum isolation voltage of 3750Vrms with minimum creepage and clearance distances of 5.0mm. It is UL1577 recognized and cUL approved, with a VDE EN 60747-5-5 option available. The wide operating temperature range of -55C to +110C enables use in harsh industrial environments. The TLP291 is NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs); consider TLP291(V4) for new applications requiring VDE approval.

The TLP291(GB-TPSE(T operates through two main subsystems coupled optically: (1) LED emitter – When a forward current (IF) flows through the infrared LED (pins 1-2), it emits near-infrared radiation (typical wavelength 940nm) with a forward voltage drop of approximately 1.25V at 10mA. The LED input is driven by the control circuit on the primary side, and the LED current determines the optical power emitted. (2) Phototransistor detector – The silicon NPN phototransistor (pins 3-4) receives the infrared light through the optically transparent dielectric inside the package. The incident photons generate base current in the phototransistor, which is amplified by the transistor’s current gain (hFE). The resulting collector current (IC) is proportional to the LED current multiplied by the current transfer ratio (CTR). For the GB rank, CTR ranges from 100% to 600%, meaning IC can be 1x to 6x the LED current at the specified conditions. The electrical isolation between input and output is maintained by the transparent insulating material that provides 3750Vrms breakdown voltage and 5.0mm creepage/clearance distances.
