The transmitter integrates an LED driver supporting 50/75/100/150/200 mA ranges with 8-bit resolution, independent references for two LED wavelengths. The AFE4490 sequentially drives two LEDs (typically red and IR) through its integrated LED driver while measuring transmitted light via a photodiode on the receiver input. The timing controller orchestrates the pulse sequence: LED1 at programmed current, then LED2, then a dark phase for ambient measurement. Photodiode current flows into a TIA with programmable feedback R/C — seven separate settings per LED optimize gain for each wavelength. An analog ambient cancellation DAC subtracts programmable DC current (1-10 uA) at the TIA input to prevent saturation. The amplified voltage is digitized by a 22-bit ADC (+/-1.2V full-scale, twos complement). Digital ambient subtraction further removes residual ambient using the dark-phase measurement. The ratio of AC/DC at both wavelengths enables SpO2 and heart rate calculation by the host processor. Controlled via SPI. External crystal provides clock reference.
